2018Inamori Research GrantsHumanities & Sociology
I am conducting research into the local community structure in the Kaga domain (present Ishikawa and Toyama Prefectures) in the early-modern times of Japan and tomura, influential persons from a farming community appointed by their feudal lords to govern and manage local communities on their behalf. With the generous support from the Inamori Foundation, I have been able to photograph many of the documents that tomura left, an essential part of this research, and I have collected relevant published materials. Due to the sheer size of the Kaga domain’s territory, a huge amount of documentation and material on a broad range of topics is available. As such, the foundations for research that I have been able to build with this grant will be a lasting asset for my efforts, and I appreciate this tremendously. By studying the local community under the rule of the Kaga feudal lords and tomura, I am hoping to clarify characteristics of the early-modern times of Japan, when the country remained stable for a long period, and position them in the context of the history of humankind.
