Identification of new circadian clock system

Summary
The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded for "circadian rhythm" research, showing that clock genes play an important role in circadian rhythms. While it would be tempting to think that this is all that is known about circadian rhythms, our previous results have shown that some rhythms are actually observed in mice in which the clock genes do not function. This result is difficult to explain by the conventional clock gene theory and suggests the existence of some oscillatory mechanism that is not dependent on clock genes. In this study, we will elucidate the clock gene-independent oscillation mechanism in mammals.
