Analysis of the mechanism of gradient formation/maintenace of PLETHORA protein in plant root
Keyword
Summary
Plants are organisms that continue to grow as they keep producing leaves and keep extending stems and roots. For this continuous growth, it is necessary to maintain a cell group called a “meristem” that is characterized by high cell division activity in the shoot apex and root apex. When plants become unable to maintain meristems, they stop growing.
To maintain meristems at the root apex, the transcription factor PLETHORA (PLT) is essential. PLT proteins exist from the tip of the root up to the aerial part of a plant as they generate a concentration gradient. It is known that this difference in concentration is the key to maintain meristem cell division activity. The gradient formation of PLT proteins is an interesting phenomenon that may serve as a model for plants’ morphogens that are not yet known to exist.
Our research team has recently succeeded in identifying a peptide hormone, RGF, which expresses itself in plant roots, and a receptor that receives the hormone. We also discovered that this RGF and the receptor regulate the concentration gradient of PLT proteins. For the purposes of this proposed research, we will conduct in-depth investigations into the mechanism of how RGF regulates the concentration gradient of PLT proteins--a potential morphogen in plants -- and how meristems are maintained, thereby reaching an understanding of the fundamental system of continued growth of plants.
